AI for Artists: Honest Help When You’re Stuck

Let’s be honest - most of us don’t have the luxury of art school.
I don’t have a teacher guiding my hand. I don’t have a studio full of fellow artists giving feedback. Most of the people in my life aren’t deeply involved in art, so getting constructive feedback isn’t always easy.
But I’ve got something else. Something at my fingertips, any time I need it.
AI - I use Chat GPT, but there are many one can use.
And no - I’m not talking about AI making the art. I’m talking about using it as a tool. A support system. A critique partner. A nudge when I’m stuck, overwhelmed, or just too close to a piece to see it clearly.
AI Doesn’t Replace the Work. It Supports It.
There’s no shame in not knowing something.
There’s no shame in needing help.
And does it matter where the insight comes from - if you’re still the one doing the work?
I’ve done the courses. I’ve invested thousands. I’ve learned what i can, at this precise time, and i am still learning, but sometimes those courses don’t cover what I need in the moment. Sometimes, I just need to ask a question and get an answer - NOW.
That’s where AI comes in.

What I Use AI For (and How It Actually Helps)
When I’m stuck on a portrait and can’t get the proportions right:
I describe what’s happening and ask for help seeing what’s off. It doesn’t fix it - it points me in the right direction.
When I’ve looked at a piece for so long, I can’t see it anymore
AI gives me fresh perspective. I’ll ask:
“Is the focal point working?”
“Does this feel balanced?”
“What emotion does this image give you?”
It’s like a second set of eyes—without the filter of politeness.
When I need help with colours
Sometimes I say:
“I want this to feel moody but elegant. I’m working with teal and rust—suggest a few palettes or tones that enhance that.”
And just like that, I have options. I still have to choose. But the spark helps.
When I need a push or a starting point
Whether it’s an idea for a new piece or help writing a caption, AI helps unblock the stuck moments. I might ask for title suggestions, or how to describe a piece about grief or stillness in 3 poetic lines.

Why I Don’t Always Trust People to Critique My Work
It’s not that people are dishonest. It’s just that they hold back.
Friends don’t want to hurt your feelings. Family often doesn’t even see what you see. And sometimes, there’s just no one around.
But AI? It tells it like it is.
It doesn’t flatter. It doesn’t sugarcoat. And sometimes—that’s exactly what I need.

You Still Have to Make the Art
Using AI doesn’t mean you’re cheating.
It doesn’t mean you’re lazy.
And it definitely doesn’t mean you’re not an artist.
You still have to create. You still have to feel your way through it. You still have to make the final decisions. But if you’re working alone - and most of us are - AI gives you someone to bounce off. Someone who doesn’t get tired, distracted, or fake polite.
And honestly? That’s kind of priceless.
You’re still in charge. But now you’re not stuck in your own head.
So whether you’re a traditional artist, a digital creator, or just someone this resonates with - drop a like, leave a comment, or better yet, share it. You might help another artist who’s stuck in the moment and needs a little push.
